The result of a hair transplantation is not always satisfactory. Sometimes a previous procedure has left visible scars or an unnatural hairline. Hair Science Clinic specializes in reconstructive hair surgery Correcting botched hair transplantations poorly executed by other clinics.
There are various hair transplant techniques. The best known are the FUT, FUE and Hair Stem Cell Transplantation (HST) method. Although all hair transplant techniques are based on the same principle - extracting hairs from the donor area and implanting them in the 'balding' area - there are major differences in quality. The results and prices can also vary widely.
One of the major disadvantages of conventional hair transplantation techniques, such as the FUT and FUE methods, is the formation of visible scar tissue in the donor area. The severity and extent of the damage can affect the recovery options. Often the scarred area can be successfully restored with reconstructive hair surgery using the HST method.
The FUT hair transplantation technique has been around for more than 30 years. A strip of skin from the donor area on the scalp is cut and than reattached resulting in a large, clearly visible scar. A painful and not entirely risk-free procedure. Logically, no regrowth will take place in the donor area and will always leave you with a permanent scar.
Since the method is considered to be outdated few FUT hair transplantations are carried out nowadays. Reconstructive hair surgery with the sophisticated HST method can be used to successfully repair the bad results.
Because of the scarring caused by the FUT method, a new technique has been developed: the Follicular Unit Extraction method. Often abbreviated as FUE or FUE CT technique. In an FUE hair transplant (Follicle Unit Extraction), hair follicles are extracted one by one from the back of the head using a hollow needle and reinserted into the recipient area, for example on top of the head, in the hairline or in the inlets. Although this is done under local anaesthetic in the donor and recipient areas, this procedure is not entirely painless either.
FUE is a beautiful solution for combating hair problems. One advantage of FUE is that by moving entire hair follicles a high hair density can be achieved. The wound healing is faster than with FUT and scars on the back of the head are less visible.
FUE also has disadvantages: no hair grows back on the areas where the hair with the follicle has been removed. This can lead to bald patches on the back of the head. In addition, FUE leaves behind small pointed scars where the hair follicles have been removed. These are particularly visible when the hair is milled or worn short. Compared to FUT, FUE is more labour-intensive and therefore more expensive.
Finally, we are witnessing a growing trend for patients to be left with an unnatural hairline after an FUE hair transplant. This is popularly known as the 'Turkish hairline'. The hairline looks unnatural because of its sharp straight line, which does not suit that person's situation. In some cases, the hair is not implanted in the right direction or the client's wishes are not heard. Several reconstructive HST hair transplants are often necessary in order to achieve a beautiful and above all natural result.
A HST hair transplantation usually takes place in one day of treatment. Your day will look something like this: We start by taking photographs and anaesthetizing the area to be treated. Then follows the harvesting of the grafts. You won’t feel anything, all we ask is your patience.
You remain mobile all day long and will not be under the influence of any sedatives. So, you can still make a phone call or stretch your legs. The medical doctor will then mark the receptor area after which we provide you with a delicious lunch of your choice.
Of all the options for reconstructive hair transplantation, HST treatment gives the most beautiful, natural result. HST uses the power of nature, the regenerative capacity of the human stem cell. What is special about this technique is that only a small part of the hair follicle - and not the entire follicle - is harvested from the donor area.
This tiny piece of tissue contains enough stem cells to make new hair grow in the recipient area. A small miracle: thanks to their regenerative capacity, several hairs can grow from one graft. The new grafts (hair follicles) are placed close to each other, resulting in high hair density and a beautiful, natural hairline.
The stem cells in the remaining hair follicles ensure (re)growth of the hair on the back of the head. This leaves the donor area virtually unaffected and makes any follow-up treatments possible. A special, patented preservation liquid stimulates growth and increases the viability of the grafts. This gives them an extra boost. This integrated approach is the basis of this sophisticated method of hair transplantation, in which hair grows in both the recipient and donor areas.
Transplanted hair follicles continue to produce hair for a lifetime. It is the most effective procedure for redensifying hair and creating volume. The harvested grafts are super small, therefore the implant is fine and very natural. See before and after pictures, or read about the experiences of clients who have gone before you.
HST is a safe medical-cosmetic procedure that causes virtually no discomfort. The treatment leaves practically no visible scars and the scalp recovers quickly. The treatment is performed under local anaesthetic. You will feel nothing during the procedure. Immediately afterwards you can leave our Hair Science Clinic on your own. Working the day after the treatment is even possible, depending on the type of profession.
Our doctors and technicians use precision instruments so that little recovery time is needed and the recipient and donor areas heal quickly. The small size of the grafts and the fact that they fit exactly into the holes makes them bond very quickly. Blood flow is restored within one day. As a result, wound healing is rapid and the risk of scarring minimal.
In HST treatment, it is not always necessary to millimetre the hair. There is a possibility to shave only a small area at the back of the head. This depends on the number of grafts to be extracted. After the treatment, the surrounding hair will fall over this. As a result, the treatment will be virtually invisible.
This sophisticated, patented HST method was developed by doctor-researcher Dr. Coen Gho. He is the only doctor in the Netherlands with a doctorate in Hair Stem Cell Transplantation. The HST technique originated from research that Gho has been carrying out since 1995 in the field of stem cells and tissue engineering in collaboration with Erasmus University Rotterdam, leading dermatologists such as Prof. H.A.M. Neumann and various European burn centres.
HST was first applied to burn patients, including the victims of the New Year fire in Volendam. Due to the sophisticated technique and the use of minuscule needles, the treatment is extremely suitable for patients with burns and scars. Since its success with burns patients, HST is used in a wider cosmetic field: the technique makes it possible to reconstruct hairlines, eyebrows, moustaches and beards in a natural way.
